According to the Tamil Calendar, the Sankranti which occur after sunrise and before sunset, the day is celebrated as the New Year's Day but if Sankranti occurs after sunset, the next day is celebrated as Puthandu. Puthandu, the Tamil New Year, is also known as Varusha Pirappu.
